An evening of Iranian film and food

Tickets £5 (£2 students)

About the films

We will be screening four Iranian short films about teachers and students, their journeys into new cultures and previous lives, their good intentions which in some cases lead to conflict, and others which forge brief but unforgettable connections with strangers. All are made by independent filmmakers working inside Iran under strict government censorship, and two were by female directors.

The Paper Bag (directed by Roshi Nasehi and Al Orange)

Welsh-Iranian artist Roshi Nasehi looks back on her only visit to Iran as a teenager. She remembers the sights, sounds, smells, her youthful grandmother and a young man with a paper bag in this vivid yet haunting piece of animation.

Bonus (Reza Nejati) - UK Premiere

When a confrontation with an unruly student spirals out of control, a maths teacher finds himself accused of assault as well as blackmailed by the child’s parent. This powerful school-based drama asks what it will cost to escape this crisis?

Flying Fishes (Mohammad Towrivarian)

Worlds collide when a young and idealistic teacher from the city accepts a post in a remote Kurdish village. His attempts to connect with a scarred and silent child in his class quickly lead him in conflict with the village council and dangerously out of his depth.

Spider-Zan (Maryam Khodabakhsh)

Returning to her family home during her nursing studies in Tehran, Negar must decide how much she wants to please her parents and how much she dare reveal of her new identity. Fate intervenes when a young life is suddenly at stake in this thoroughly Iranian reflection on Marvel’s Spider-Man

About Whispers from Iran

Our screening events take place three or four times a year, predominantly in the Southampton Persian Cultural Centre (South of England). They combine several short films, food, live music and discussions for audiences which include members of the local Iranian community, those curious to learn more about Persian culture, and film lovers of any persuasion. There will also be occasions when screening events are held in other UK cities.
